terrell wilson home after 52 years behind bars
On June 5, 2026, after serving 52 years of an immoral, unconstitutional life sentence, Mr. Terrell Wilson emerged from Lakeland Correctional to return to Detroit. In 2012, the United States Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life imprisonment without the possibility for parole is an unconstitutional sentence for juveniles. In 2022, the Michigan Supreme Court extended Miller’s holding to people aged 18, and then in 2025, to 19-and 20 years-olds. It was under these holdings, Mr. Wilson’s sentence to die in prison was reduced to time-served.
Mr. Wilson was 19 years old when he went in and 72 years old when he left. Even after more than five decades exiled from society--and a half-century with no reason for hope that the legal system could rectify his condemnation in 1973 to die in prison--Mr. Wilson never lost his light, his singing voice, nor his positivity. While incarcerated, Mr. Wilson was a model citizen and worker, spending his free time focused on creating artwork with positive and “frank” messages. Upon his release, he finds joy and awe in things we all take for granted. He couldn’t believe how Spotify could play any song, or how Siri just listens to you; he finds it all magical. Mr. Wilson resembles many of our grandfathers, and is quick to impart to others lessons he’s learned from life.
We are elated to welcome Mr. Wilson home!
